Two Student Presenters needed for Illinois Education & Technology Conference (IETC) Poster Session10/7/2015 I have been asked to have two students present the technology poster room 301 presented last year at Tech 15 at the Illinois Education & Technology Conference (IETC) Thursday, November 5, around 10:30am in Springfield. I will be looking for two interested students whose parents are willing to drive them to and from Springfield. I will meet the parents and students at the event. Before the event, the students will also have to work after school one or two days to recreate the poster, which I misplaced over the summer. I need to give the conference coordinators the names of the students by the end of the day. Please email me today [email protected] if you are interested in having your child present at the conference. If more than two students are interested I will draw names from a hat.

The geography bee is coming in November. Here are some resources for students who are interested in preparing for the geography bee.

Vocabulary Costume Assignment As you know fourth grade does not dress up for Halloween. As part of our holiday fun we will be having a vocabulary costume guessing game at our party. Please read the assignment below and help your child prepare for an exciting vocabulary adventure. We will be reading Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster by Debra Frasier. The story is about a girl named Sage who has misheard and misunderstood one of Mrs. Page's weekly vocabulary words. Her error leads to a humbling catastrophe: a momentous tragedy, in front of the entire class. Sage turns her vocabulary disaster: an event bringing great misfortune, into a triumph: a true success. In the story the school has an annual vocabulary parade where students dress up as their favorite vocabulary words. For the Halloween party students need to: Choose appropriate word and turn in their word on Friday, October 23th, so can make a class list of the words they will have to guess at the party. Make and bring a simple costume on Friday, October 30th showing their vocabulary word. The costume can be as simple as a paper hat decorated with pictures that highlight their vocabulary word. For example, they could be the word precipitation and have pictures of rain, snow and hail coming out of their hat. Write a description of their word, which they will read to the class on Halloween (speaking grade). The class will use their description to guess their word. The description should not include the word. HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE! We are working on rounding and comparing whole numbers in math. This can be a little tricky as we apply place value and round at different place values within numbers. There is a practice sheet this weekend to reinforce what we covered in class today. For this sheet (and our students should know this too) when a digit is underlined, that is the digit that we need to round to. The underlined digit is the digit that is either going to be rounded up or remain the same. The digit to the immediate right of the underlined digit will determine if the underlined digit changes or not. We are working on understanding why zeros follow the rounded (underlined) digit as well as on understanding that you keep any value that comes before the rounded digit. We worked with number lines to deepen our understanding of rounding today. Number lines can be a great help while working on the problems. All of the problems on the practice sheet are problems we have worked on in class. Nothing is new. Here is a supplemental video that is also beneficial for both parents as students! It does a nice job of working through a rounding problem. I’m sending home student photo with a QR Code. These have magnets so they can hang around all year. The QR code has a link to a recording of your child talking about his/her goals for 4th grade. In order to listen to the recording you will need a QR reader. These can be downloaded from the “app store”. I use i-nigma. If you do not have access to a QR reader, drop by the classroom before or after school and you can use one of our iPads to listen to your child’s goals. We will be reviewing and revising our goals each quarter.
