Students are working in teams on Native American Projects to learn about specific tribes. For the first part of the project students are creating a paper diorama to show something important about their tribe. Then writing a description and explaining its importance. These will be due Monday. We will do a gallery walk on Tuesday, providing feedback to fellow students.

Tests went back today! Overall, students did well. Students still have the opportunity to make up half of the points they missed. To do this they need to use lined notebook paper with a correct heading (name, subject and date in the right hand corner). For each question they missed they need to provide the problem number, the correct answer, and write a sentence or two explaining why they missed the question. Please show all work. We have begun unit 7 which is more conceptual and vocabulary based then operational. The unit is on factors, multiples, and prime vs composite numbers. This should be an easier unit for students, though still important as it helps lay foundations for number relations. We will also be working on problem solving skills. Currently, we are going through the unit slightly quicker than anticipated, so count on the test being Tuesday even though the packet is not due until Wednesday. I will not change the due date for the packet. I appreciate the feedback on the packets, and am working to make a few changes. For this unit 7 packet, students need only do the odd numbered problems on the front of the page. The back has fewer word problem so still complete that in full please. There will also be a few optional pages added to most packets. These are to challenge students as well as to help practice and cement understanding. They will be worth extra credit for the problems completed. Also, we are using our notebooks to write definitions as well as give examples of how to work problems. This will be use as a tool to help provide more examples and explanations as we continue with our math learning. Attached are answer sheets to the homework problems if you wish to print them off to assist our students as they work. Students explain the partial quotients method of division. Their explanation is clear and to the point. It also shows how the method uses multiplication to solve the division problem. This method will provide a foundation and understanding for why the traditional method works.
We are learning how to divide using partial quotients. This is an important step as it connects place value and key division concepts to long division.
Here is a video that walks through how partial quotients work.

The homework has a visual way of setting up the problem. Each step is shown inside of a square or rectangle. This shows that you have to multiply the numbers on the outside. The divisor is always on the vertical side. The quotients are always on the horizontal side. On the inside you have your dividend and subtract the product of the divisor and the compatible number chosen. The visual in the box incorporates what we learned in partial products (height X width = are). Below is an example.
I hope 2016 finds you happy, healthy and energized. I had a wonderful break enjoying time with friends and family. I hope you enjoyed your break and are ready to start new learning adventures.
Thank you for the class gift and all for the kind and thoughtful gifts. I am very lucky to be at Coonley. Also a very special thank you to all the parents who have made this first quarters special events extra special by volunteering their time and talents. A special thank you to Malachi’s mom for the insightful presentation on Hanukah, and Felix’s mom for showing us how to make origami water bombs (no water involved) and paper cranes. Also thanks to Brian and Luke’s mom for their outstanding work as room parents. We will continue to have field trips and other events and look forward to having more parents involved in the 4th grade learning. It is again time to collect and send in Box-Tops. Please try to collect as many Box-Tops as possible. If you don’t want to put them on the sheets you can bring them in a zip-lock bag. Also the Read to Succeed forms went out before break. Don’t worry if you loose the form just record the 6 hours of reading time and sign the paper and I will make sure you child receives their Gr |
