This year there will be only 2 student council representatives for each classroom. We will be having a class election next week. Students need to have the application completed by Monday, October 1st. They will give a speech to the class on Wednesday. Then we will have the class election. The application is below.

This past two weeks we've been working on Unit one in the Envision program. Unit one focuses on place value. There will be a math test this Monday on Unit One.
These past weeks we worked on understanding place value and using place value charts to write numbers in standard form (35,821), expanded form (30,000 + 5,000 + 800 + 21 + 1) and written form (thirty five thousand, eight hundred and twenty one). We worked on understanding the relationship between the places (In the number 5,424 the 4 in the hundreds place is 100 times larger than the 4 in the ones place.) We worked on comparing large numbers (345,678 > 335,678, because the 4 in the ten thousands place is greater than the 3 in the ten thousands place of the second number) Finally, we worked on rounding. For example, 345,678 rounds to 350,000 when rounded to the ten thousands place. Tomorrow students will make a study note card in class. We will talk about how to study for a math test. You can use the above list of skills to help your child review for the test. There are many things your child can do to study for this test:
Overall, students did well on Friday's Math quiz. I just wanted to remind you of the test correction policy in 4th grade. Students can make corrections for half the missed points. This is helpful with quizzes as the same material will be on the unit test, so this is a great review.
I use the same policy for test corrections that Ms. Price uses. Students can make corrections and they will make up half of the points they have missed on the test. To do this they need to use lined notebook paper with a correct heading (name, subject and date in the right hand corner). For each question they missed they need to provide:
We have a lot of field trips and events, and will need many wonderful volunteers. There is a new process this year for chaperones to complete. Please follow the steps below:

Volunteer Programs at 773-553-1544 or send an email to [email protected]. We created bioglyphs in class on Thursday. A bioglyph is a symbolic representation of personal traits and interests that are important in each person’s life. We are doing this activity to both build a classroom community and to gain a mathematical and scientific understanding of how symbols can be used to represent concrete concepts. Below is a copy of the homework page that went home Thursday. Since my post is late I will make the Bioglyphs due on Wednesday.
