- Khan Academy - I have assigned the addition and subtraction tutorials to students.
- Review past unit 2 quizzes and make corrections.
- This weeks Opening work Packet has problems pulled from the test (with different numbers, but same wording)
- We will make the test notecard on Wednesday - you will want to review this Wednesday night.
- Come in at 8AM if you want extra help before the test.
The Unit 2 Math test will be this Thursday. This test will focus on addition and subtraction of multidigit numbers. Students need to be able to regroup (borrow and carry) across zeros. This test will also include several questions that ask students to solve multi-step problems. There are many things your child can do to study for this test:

The field trip to the Biennial exhibit was a success and enjoyed by all of 4th grade. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make this trip a success. The Biennial will continue until January 7, 2018. There are many great experiences to be had around the city and up in Wisconsin. Here is a link to the Biennial website http://chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org/ . This site include information about the Johnson Wax building and Wingspread tours. These are two amazing Frank Lloyd Wright sites and the tour is entirely free including the bus ride to Wisconsin. We are starting our Biennial project, which is to have all the 4th grade students work together to create a Future City Tower playing off the idea of Tatiana Bilbao Estudio’s tower. Her tower was created by 15 different designers each building parts of the tower. Each 4th grader will build a piece of the tower. We are first doing a warm up project to get us thinking about parts of the city now, and what those parts might be like in the future. Then students will choose an element of the city, and create a section of the tower showing that part of the city in the future. Students will write about what they think a city will be like in the future. The Warm-Up project is due Monday 10/23. Students should have enough time to complete this in class. The Future City Project will be due 10/31. We are currently working on unit two in the Envision program. This unit builds on unit one’s focus on place value and rounding. Unit two focuses on properties of addition (identity, associative, inverse and commutative), multi-digit addition with regrouping, multi-digit subtraction and multi-step problem solving. Students who showed mastery of this on the pretest are working on the same skills with decimals.
This week’s quiz focused on properties of addition. Corrections can be made and will help students learn to identify the different properties. This week’s quiz will be on addition and subtraction, and the unit test will be next week. I gave back the math test today. I was very impressed with the quality of many of the notecards handed in with the test. While few students actually used the cards on the test, many of the students stated that they felt this was a good review, and overall I am pleased with the student's performance on the test.
I will be using the same policy for test corrections that Ms. Price uses. Students can make corrections and they will make up half of the points they have missed on the test. To do this they need to use lined notebook paper with a correct heading (name, subject and date in the right hand corner). For each question they missed they need to provide:
Students have the unit one test tomorrow. We have reviewed in class today. The test will cover place value, comparing numbers and rounding (with decimals and exponents for the students working ahead). Students have their quizzes, a review sheet and a note card to study with. If they need additional help I will be in the classroom at 8 AM tomorrow.
Notes on the Note Card: I am testing the note card as study tool test aide for math tests. We created the note cards together based on what students said they would need to know for the test. I wrote what they told me to on a sample note card so students could copy it or write it in their own words. Tomorrow I will collect the note cards before the test. It is my hope that writing things down and reviewing them will help us remember for the test. If the students are struggling on the test they may ask me for the note card to use. No points will be taken off, but I will know which students need to work on mastering the knowledge. I did not check note cards so you may want to look them over tonight. I will see how this goes on this test. I want students to work on being able to independently create a note card for each unit. If they can do that they will have mastered an important study skill - knowing what they need to know for a test. |
