Both neighborhood 7th grade classes recently completed a unit on Social Issues novels. After reading the novels, they were encouraged to perform a "call to action," where they could make as little or big of a change as they wanted. Sam Levine, a student from 204, read Anything But Typical, which is about a boy with autism who explains his daily interactions and activities.
Sam chose to reach out to Gateway to Learning, which is a school in Lincoln Square that works with students with special needs that are in high school and over 18 years old. The school focuses on teaching students life skills that would make them successful in their everyday endeavors. Sam asked how he could help and they provided him with a list of things that they are in need of. Sam, and his team, found it easiest to divide the supplies by grade band:
Today in class we were working with probability. We used a spoon to launch a cup 10 times and found how many times it landed on its top, bottom or side. Most of the time the cup will land on its side (about 70%). The homework is to change something in the cup-spoon launching system so that you change the probability of the cup landing on its top, bottom or side. This project is meant to be a fun way for students to be creative and solve a problem. The homework sheet is below if your child forgot to bring it home.
Tomorrow's quiz will again focus on fractions. It will include addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominators. Decomposing fractions - breaking them into smaller pieces. For example, 2/3 = 1/3 + 1/3. It will also include using 1/2 as a benchmark fraction to see which fractions are greater or less than 1/2.
4th grade will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness March 26th to April 2nd. A letter went home last week with information about the test. Please refer to the following information that was in the parent email blast about your child opting out of the assessment. If you have any questions, please email me.State Testing Procedures
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and CPS have announced testing procedures for the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). Test information from a previous blast has been add below this new information. ISBE Guidelines
