The Friday's math test will be postponed until next week. This week we will work on rounding. There will be a quiz on Friday. The quiz will focus on rounding and have a few place value questions. Students will be asked to round numbers to the tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands place on the quiz.

This past week we began Unit one in the Envision program. Unit one focuses on place value. There will be a math test this Friday on Unit One.
This past week we worked on understanding place value and using place value charts to write numbers in standard form (35,821), expanded form (30,000 + 5,000 + 800 + 21 + 1) and written form (thirtyfive thousand, eight hundred and twenty one). We worked on understanding the relationship between the places (In the number 5,424 the 4 in the hundreds place is 100 times larger than the 4 in the ones place.) Finally we worked on comparing large numbers (345,678 > 335,678, because the 4 in the ten thousands place is greater than the 3 in the ten thousands place of the second number) I gave a math quiz on Friday to assess how well students were understanding these concepts. Quizzes will be returned on Monday and will provide a valuable study aid for Friday’s test. If students were struggling with a concept on the quiz, I provided an extra sheet to help them. This week we will work on rounding numbers. All of these concepts will be on Friday’s test. In science, we are still working on our study of architecture as we prepare for the field trip on October 10. We are also making posters of the Science and Engineering Practices. Room 301 is scheduled to take the beginning of the year NWEA test on these dates:
* Make sure your child eats a good breakfast so they can do their best on the test. We created bioglyphs in class today. A bioglyph is a symbolic representation of personal traits and interests that are important in each person’s life. We are doing this activity to both build a classroom community and to gain a mathematical and scientific understanding of how symbols can be used to represent concrete concepts. Below is a copy of the homework page that went home today. |
