This past week we worked on understanding place value and using place value charts to write numbers in standard form (35,821), expanded form (30,000 + 5,000 + 800 + 21 + 1) and written form (thirtyfive thousand, eight hundred and twenty one). We worked on understanding the relationship between the places (In the number 5,424 the 4 in the hundreds place is 100 times larger than the 4 in the ones place.) Finally we worked on comparing large numbers (345,678 > 335,678, because the 4 in the ten thousands place is greater than the 3 in the ten thousands place of the second number)
I gave a math quiz on Friday to assess how well students were understanding these concepts. Quizzes will be returned on Monday and will provide a valuable study aid for Friday’s test. If students were struggling with a concept on the quiz, I provided an extra sheet to help them.
This week we will work on rounding numbers. All of these concepts will be on Friday’s test.
In science, we are still working on our study of architecture as we prepare for the field trip on October 10. We are also making posters of the Science and Engineering Practices.
