Thank you to the parents who went with on our mapping walk, your help was important to the success of this project. The students did a good job of identifying the important elements to include on their Coonley block Map. They will be working on turning these into finished block maps during social science this week.
Language Arts: We will start reading Any Small Goodness by Tony Johnston. This is a challenging book so we will be focusing on strategies that help us comprehend challenging text. We will continue to look at how different types of questions can be used to help us comprehend challenging text. Most of the reading work this week will be completed in class, so please have your child continue to read for 20-30 minutes each night. Occasionally, I will have students reread a succession of the book we have read in class. This rereading is an important strategy for building understanding. I will send a remind notifying you if I ask students to reread so you will know there is reading homework.
I have met with students last week to give them their Accelerated Reader levels and goals. These goals can be found in the back of their reading notebook. I will conference with students half way through the quarter to see how these goals are fitting. Additionally, I ask that students read one informational book a month. I will be highlighting some of the choices to make students aware of the variety of informational books they can read.
We will continue working on Wordly Wise 3000 chapter 1 this week. We will complete the lesson work on Wednesday, review on Thursday and take the test on Friday. I will try and grade these and send them home Friday so you and your child will be able to determine how your Wordly Wise study routine is working. The Wordly Wise book goes home most nights, please help your child remember to bring it back each day for class.
Science – This week we will focus on measuring skills. Students will be working with balances, timers, rulers, graduated cylinders, thermometers and more. We will be focusing on accurately measuring and recording data complete with units. Most of our measurements will be using the metric system, but we will discuss standard units. There will be an open note book quiz on this material, as well as a performance assessment.
Math- This week we will be starting to use the enVision materials as we start a unit on place value. Students will have a page of homework practice problems a night as well as the occasional multiplication math fact sheet.
